The Heart of a Waterjet Pump: Why Hydraulic Oil and Regular Maintenance Matter
The secret to a long-lasting and reliable waterjet high-pressure pump lies not only in its ability to generate extreme pressure, but also in the condition and performance of its hydraulic system.
In waterjet technology, high-pressure pumps are among the most critical components of any production system. Operating at pressures of several thousand bar, these pumps depend heavily on hydraulic oil quality, proper maintenance, and the condition of their hydraulic components.
At AquaJet Technik Swiss GmbH, we always say:
“Hydraulic oil is the lifeblood of a high-pressure pump. Take good care of your pump’s heart, and it will take good care of your production.”
A Recent Service Experience That Reminded Us Why Oil Maintenance Matters
A few weeks ago, we carried out a comprehensive overhaul of a waterjet high-pressure pump.
During the maintenance process and hydraulic oil replacement, we discovered significant contamination and deposits inside the hydraulic oil reservoir.
The inner walls of the tank were covered with thick, tar-like sludge and accumulated residues.
This situation clearly demonstrated how seriously aged or contaminated hydraulic oil and long-term deposits can affect a hydraulic system.
But what would have happened if these contaminants had entered the hydraulic system through the suction line?
This is exactly where the importance of effective oil filtration becomes clear.
A Small Filter with a Major Protective Role
The suction filter inside the hydraulic oil reservoir plays an important role in protecting the system.
Its purpose is to help prevent larger contaminants and deposits from entering sensitive hydraulic components through the suction line.
Without adequate filtration, or when a filter is no longer functioning properly, serious problems may occur:
Increased wear and potential damage to the hydraulic pump.
Contamination or blockage of proportional valves, pressure control components, and hydraulic passages.
Unstable pressure conditions and reduced pump performance.
Unexpected machine downtime and expensive repairs.
What makes this situation particularly serious is that damage to certain hydraulic components cannot always be resolved with a simple oil change or minor repair.
In severe cases, costly hydraulic components may need to be completely replaced.
That is why regular hydraulic oil replacement alone is not enough. Thorough reservoir cleaning, filter inspection, and replacement when necessary are equally important.
A filter provides essential protection, but it can never replace proper maintenance and continuous attention to hydraulic oil condition.
Maintenance Is Not an Expense — It Is an Investment in Production
Maintenance of a high-pressure pump should never begin only after a malfunction or failure occurs.
Preventive maintenance is the foundation of operational reliability, machine availability, and long-term cost efficiency.
This includes using manufacturer-approved hydraulic oil, following recommended maintenance intervals, inspecting filters, and regularly monitoring operating conditions.
A timely oil and filter change today can prevent significantly higher repair costs and extended production downtime tomorrow.
Because every hour of unexpected downtime can have a serious financial impact on a manufacturing operation.
Because We Believe Every Machine Has Its Own Character
At AquaJet Technik Swiss GmbH, we have believed in one principle for many years:
“CNC waterjet machines and high-pressure pumps have their own character — and to us, they even have a soul.”
Of course, these machines consist of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic components.
But every machine has its own operating characteristics, behavior, and unmistakable sound.
In a way, a high-pressure pump communicates with us.
Sometimes through its operating sound, sometimes through unusual vibrations, and sometimes through changes in pressure behavior.
The key is to recognize these signals early, understand what they mean, and take the right technical action.
Because these machines need:
Attention. Observation. Care.
When you give your machine the attention and maintenance it deserves, it rewards you with reliable performance, high availability, and a longer service life.
For us, there is hardly anything more satisfying than bringing a previously idle high-pressure pump back into operation after successful maintenance.
Because a perfectly running high-pressure pump sometimes sounds like classical music to our ears. And that moment is priceless! 🎶
