Is 3,800 Bar Enough? When Is 6,000 Bar Really Necessary?
One of the questions we frequently encounter in waterjet technology is:
“Does higher pressure automatically mean better cutting performance?”
At first glance, the answer may seem simple. As pressure increases, the energy density of the waterjet increases, which can provide significant cutting-performance advantages in certain applications.
However, in industrial production, it is not enough to focus only on the question:
“How many bar?”
The actual performance of a waterjet system depends on the interaction between pressure, water flow rate, orifice diameter, mixing tube/nozzle combination, abrasive flow, material type, material thickness, required cut quality, and operating costs.
3,800 Bar Is Still a Powerful Production Solution
High-pressure systems in the range of approximately 3,800–4,000 bar remain a proven and highly capable technology for many industrial waterjet applications.
Maximum pressure alone does not determine the performance of a system.
When pump capacity, orifice size, abrasive delivery, cutting head, and CAD/CAM cutting parameters are correctly matched, the result can be a highly efficient and reliable production process.
For this reason, simply saying:
“6,000 bar is higher, therefore it is automatically better.”
would be an incomplete engineering approach.
The more important question is:
Which pressure range provides the best production economics for your specific parts and process?
When Does 6,000 Bar Make Sense?
Higher-pressure technology can provide significant advantages for certain materials, thicknesses, and production requirements.
In applications where cutting speed is critical, with certain thicker materials, high production volumes, or processes where cycle times need to be reduced, 6,000-bar systems may become an attractive option.
However, cutting speed should never be evaluated in isolation.
Pump investment cost, high-pressure components, maintenance intervals, spare-part costs, energy consumption, abrasive consumption, and annual production volume should all be considered together.
Because ultimately, customer profitability is measured not by the pressure in bar, but by the total cost per produced part.
Pressure Alone Does Not Equal Performance
A waterjet cutting system should be considered as a complete process chain:
Pump → High-Pressure Line → Orifice → Cutting Head → Mixing Tube → Abrasive → CNC → CAD/CAM → Material
If even one element in this chain is incorrectly selected or poorly optimized, the potential of the entire system can be affected.
For example, an unsuitable orifice/nozzle combination or incorrect abrasive parameters may prevent the available power of a high-performance pump from being efficiently transferred into the cutting process.
That is why our approach to system configuration is simple:
Understand the application first — then select the right pressure.
Cutting Speed or Cost per Part?
This is an important distinction for every manufacturer.
Higher cutting speed is obviously valuable. But faster cutting does not automatically mean more economical production.
The real questions are:
How many parts can I produce per hour?How much abrasive do I consume per part?What is my energy consumption?What are my maintenance costs?How much downtime do I have?What is my annual production volume?
When these factors are analyzed together, it becomes much clearer which pressure range actually provides the best solution for the production process.
3,800 Bar or 6,000 Bar?
Our answer is:
It depends on the application.
Instead of simply choosing the higher number, the goal should be to choose the right production process and system configuration.
For one manufacturer, a properly optimized 3,800–4,000-bar system may be the most economical investment. For another company with different materials, higher production volumes, or different process requirements, 6,000-bar technology may provide significant productivity advantages.
